In this homily, Pastor Lesley reflects on Paul’s call in Philippians to be of one mind in Christ. Using the movie Drumline as an illustration, she shows how true strength in any community comes not from individual showmanship, but from people aligning themselves with a shared purpose under a unifying vision.

She reminds the church that Christian unity is not sameness or uniformity. It is not about everyone getting their own way, but about letting the mind of Christ shape the life of the community. In a world that prizes ego, individuality, and personal success, this is hard work. Yet Paul points us not to our own efforts, but to Jesus, who emptied himself, took the form of a servant, and gave himself fully for the life of the world.

This message invites both individuals and the congregation to find freedom in Christ: freedom from always needing to win, freedom from pride, freedom to listen, forgive, serve, and love. Because Christ has already accomplished what we could not, the church is able to gather with empty hands, receive mercy, and live together in the unity that only Jesus can create.
